Roger joined the Royal Navy in May 1958. After completing his initial training in January 1960, he served on HM Ships Bulwark, Hermes and Blake. He worked on Sea Hawk, Whirlwind, Wasp, Wessex MK 1 and 5 and Sea King aircraft. He was selected for mechanician in 1966 and completed the necessary courses in September 1968 and passed the Professional Qualifying Examination for Air Engineering Mechanician (Radio) 1st Class. He had extensive experience in radar and radio workshops and during the last few months of his career was responsible for the continuation training of young radio trade ratings. He ended his Naval career as a Chief Petty Officer in February 1983.
